Spotlight on Monroe County Education Foundation Scholarship Winner: Hannah Deskins Boone

In 2011, a petite, smiling high school senior, Hannah Deskins Boone, was awarded the Leona Lynch Kessel Scholarship. She used the scholarship to help pay tuition at Concord University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Later, Boone earned a Master's Degree in Special Education. She says, "I was very honored to receive this award and make Monroe County proud. I love Monroe County and am proud to live here and watch my children grow up here."

She has been employed as a teacher by Monroe County Schools for ten years. Most recently, she taught at James Monroe High School, working with students with special needs. She currently works from home but plans to return to Monroe County Schools in the future.

During her time at JMHS, she sponsored the cheerleading squad for several years.

Her colleague, special educator Britney Greer, commented that Boone always greeted staff and students with a smile and was ever ready to lend a hand. She added that Boone had an excellent rapport with students.

JMHS senior Cameron Littles agrees. He has been in a class taught by Mrs. Boone for the past three years and has fond memories. "She was a good, kind teacher who always helped us. She made us feel like we could learn. She never doubted us; she knew we could do the work." Littles reflected for a moment, then spoke in a serious tone, "She was probably the best teacher I ever had."

Boone lives near Red Sulphur Springs with husband, Mitchell, and their two children, Eleanor and Damon.

Congratulations to Hannah Boone for her successful contributions to the children of Monroe County and also to the Monroe County Education Foundation for their role in her teacher preparation.
