Monroe County Education Foundation Announces New Scholarship to Support
International Studies

January 2023

The Monroe County Education Foundation is pleased to announce the “Pegasus Scholarship,” a first-of-its-kind scholarship that will support people in Monroe County to pursue international educational opportunities. This  scholarship is funded by donations from Teresa Larew, Johnny Spangler, Allie Bodnar, Christopher Spangler and J.D. Spangler.

In Greek mythology “Pegasus” is a winged horse that closely resembles the James Monroe Maverick. J.D. Spangler noted that his family chose to name this scholarship after the winged horse because “Monroe County gives people strong roots and we hope that this scholarship also gives them wings.”

Applications for the Pegasus Scholarship will be available in 2023 and are open to any Monroe County resident who wishes to pursue training or education outside of the United States.

Speaking at the foundation’s fall dinner at Old World Libations on September 24th, Spangler said, “Nearly two decades ago, the people of Monroe County supported me to study abroad in Honduras. The skills and experiences that I gained during that time made me more competitive for colleges and jobs, and ultimately changed the course of my life. But my biggest lesson from that experience was that communities working together are really unbeatable. We’re pleased to give back to a community that has given us so much.”

Since 2004, the Monroe County Education Foundation has provided 161 scholarships worth $140,200 to support county residents pursue their educational goals. The foundation offers scholarships for all county residents, not just college-bound high school seniors. Adults and people wishing to gain vocational training are also encouraged to apply. “Monroe County’s support for education, and this foundation in particular, shows just how mighty small communities can be when they work together,” said Leta Comer, President of the Monroe County Education Foundation. “I’d like to thank everyone who has supported us before, continues to support us now, and who are interested in supporting us in the future. It takes a village, and we’ve got a good one.”

The foundation would like to thank its donors, volunteers and vendors who supported this year’s fall dinner, including Old World Libations, West Farm, KaitieDidit Kustom Kreations and Dutch House.
